Concept Thumbnails

After researching concepts and ideas, I took those images I found and created new ideas. The sketches to me are not gripping enough. They all seemed to be just surface ideas, nothing that I really want to pursue. So I am trying to pick out an idea and play around with it a bit more.

Does anyone have any feedback or an idea that you think could be quite good?

This is my favourite sketch out of all of them. I like the idea of having a woman surrounded by food and trying to make an everyday decision. I could put all the healthy food on one side and having unhealthy food of the other. Or change the colours of the food depending on how healthy it is.
This sketch is about a woman wanting to grab unhealthy food. This sketch is probably my least favourite. It does not having any power or punch to it and it does not really convey my communication objectives.

This sketch is showing how someone wants to break free from this illness but her hands are tied up with a measuring tape. I like the idea behind this image. It gives the feeling of being trapped.

This sketch is someone’s lip being sewn together while she is trying to eat food. Again, I like this idea because it gives the feeling of being trapped but looking at it, this is more suited to the subject of anorexia not bulimia.

  1. I’ve read your communication objectives and decided I would comment on this post as you stated you are unsure which idea to pursue. Overall I think it would be easiest to pick either Anorexia or Bulimia to focus on. Anorexia is about not eating, where as Bulimia is about eating then throwing up. So it would be hard to interpret both in an image.
Sketch #1 – This sketch feels the strongest. Your idea of having healthy food on one side and junk on the other is a great indicator of a eating disorder. I feel like the image is not strong enough though as all the food would be a bit too much. You could have the model holding a bowl of fruit looking in a mirror, and in the reflection have her holding a bowl containing cake or another item of junk food.

Sketch #2 – I feel this image isn’t strong as we do not see facials. Only a hand and some unhealthy food. If I saw this I would think it is about people eating unhealthy food opposed to an eating disorder.

Sketch #3 – The idea of her hands being tied up is a good idea. You could incorporate this into idea one by having her hands tied up around the unhealthy food. If you pursue sketch three I would recommend having an item of unhealthy food in the background as we need to know why her hands are tied up.

Sketch #4 – This idea is also good as it communicates eating disorders and how she is not allowed to eat the food. You would need to show her facials to communicate that she wants it but can not have it.

    Hope this helps 🙂

  2. Hey Ruby! I like sketch 1 and sketch 3 I feel these are the strongest and stand out – I agree with what Kelsey has said in the way that sketch 1 is a strong idea that really shows the everyday decision for girls struggling with this – having the junk food verse the healthy food what they feel they should be eating right there looking at them verse what they may want and wish they could have. I like The idea of combining 1 and 3 with simplifying sketch 1 by doing so.
You could have a girl with her hands tied up with an unhealthy plate of food in front of her. However, it does depend on if you are trying to show bulimia or anorexia though. Sketch 4 is good for anorexia – but if you are going with showing eating disorders in general sketch 1 is a good representation even with the hands tied up to show the force and pressure on the decision of food everyday.
Another idea is you could have a girl sitting down in front of a plate of healthy food no hands tied up but use the measuring tape idea to stretch around the sides of her and around the plate, to show she is in a circle of her self and the healthy food trapped with the measuring band closing her in. Then if you wanted to add more have on the outside the unhealthy food which she looks like she desires, wants to try but can’t get to.
Your ideas are cool! I reckon you could bring together an awesome piece so hope the comments help 🙂

  3. I really like your third sketch! To me it seems really powerful because in this day and age women are so obsessed with measurements so having someone bound by a tape measure is a very clever idea. Something to possibly include in that might be scales as well? women’s obsession with their weight as well as their measurement could be good. Just an Idea off the top of my head would be to have someone tied to a chair with a tape measure and then have scales hanging above their head about to drop like out of a cartoon, just an Idea though, your ideas are good though so keep up the good work!! 🙂

  4. The sketch with the sewn lips is incredibly powerful! Conveys a lot of emotion and provokes intense thoughts of captivity and bondage. Its not a glamorous angle to take but it fits with your communication objectives. Personally I feel like this angle would be the most compelling. However perhaps you could think of a better way to communicate the weight issue..? Perhaps measuring tape is the actual object that it holding the lips together? Rather than just thread or staples? That way you might have more success communicating the purpose of the image? Without having to make the image too cluttered.. Just a thought

  5. Hey Ruby, really like your sketches and i can relate to how you feel you cant quite come up with one idea to use for your final image, i am in the same boat. I really like sketch one and the ideas behind that. i think you could make that look really awesome and would be the best way to portray your article. Although i have read the other comments above and i do agree that perhaps a measuring tape or some stronger images than food may help to have a more powerful message than just food? I think that the food idea is good but could be used in many different situations and not just the one that your article is talking about. Anyway i look forward to seeing your final image and i really feel strongly about the article that you found. 🙂
